Workshop “Music Making Robots

Join a workshop by Moritz Simon Geist, media artist and robotic musician who produced the world’s first techno record played entirely by self-made futuristic robots. Each sound on his record is played by robots. Small motors beat on metal, 3D-printed robo-kalimbas vibrate with deep bass sounds, salvaged parts from old hard drives click and cut. Over several years Moritz Simon Geist committed to build, tweak, test and play all of his DIY robotic instruments.

Moritz Geist’s ‘Sonic Robots’ push the boundaries of the imaginable and invent a new plurality in music creation. In electronic music, many imagine humans playing machines. Few imagined these music machines being actual robots. In 2012, Geist ventured into this exploration with the invention of his well-known oversized 808 robot. The MR-808 robot is an iconic drum machine gone physical, no longer dwelling in the confines of circuitry alone. In the form of a 4 by 2 meter music box, filled with mechanical parts which play the instruments live, a new idea in electro and human-machine interaction was born. Now, he goes even further to pioneer the unknown and futuristic sound world of ‘Robotic Electronic Music’.

In this workshop, Moritz will explain the technical background of his techno music robots and even gie you the chance to build your own little robot that can make music.

Interactive Installation: Nagual Dance

A revolutionary software that translates movement into a variety of harmonious sounds, creating a unique and interactive music experience from one performance to another. Rather than reacting to the music, the user receives instant musical responses based on their movements. This begins an exciting cycle of different sounds, which you explore with your body. You don’t dance to the music, the music dances to you. Nagual Dance puts you inside the music. It transforms your body into an instrument and each dance session into an engaging performance.

Installation: The Future Is Not Unwritten

THE FUTURE IS NOT UNWRITTEN is a Smart Film about Artificial Intelligence and Transhumanism. An intelligent film which narrates and transforms itself endlessly, using machine learning and deep learning code. Implemented algorithms – used by GOOGLE to create AI – are utilized to explore the gigantic dimension of current developments.

Are we developing into „Übermenschen“, into „Super-Humans“ or are we getting rid of ourselves? Ethical categories or historical blueprints are missing: there is no case study on the abolition of mankind.

THE FUTURE IS NOT UNWRITTEN is an alternative contribution to this discourse. A narrative corridor between art and science that approaches the moral renegotiation of the human being.
